Plank Road

This is a re-post of a painting I did last fall. I became completely disappointed with my bar scene painting and re-stretched the canvas and have started over with a new abstract painting (which only has some of the pencil lines sketched up so I didn't see any reason to post it yet). One of the aspects about these paintings that I've always enjoyed is I don't do preliminary sketches. I draw directly onto the canvas or panel and feel my way along as I paint it. For me, this approach keeps the surprises in the picture and prevents it from becoming an exercise in merely copying. I also feel that the taped edges give a sense of order to the picture that some of my other work lacks. I guess I'll see how my next one proceeds. I titled this painting, Plank Road since I use a 6 ft. long piece of shelving.

  1. I love this piece..It reminds me of Klee's work. Which I truly love. I suppose this is done in Oil? Glad you did the post again.

  2. Interesting the way taking an unusual or awkward shape will sometimes free you to work more spontaneously and creatively. Restrictions can be positive things.

  3. Thanks Katelen and Dave. I think I'm going to stay with this type of work for awhile
